I wouldn't call him weak, because he was still with Whitebeard for a good while. His devil fruit makes feel extra pain everytime he's attacked, he specifically searched for this fruit for years. He had it planned and knew what he was doing

Awakened Zoan type devil fruit users! Oda showed Awakening this early! Thought they were just some strange creatures like "That thing" from Cp9 roung bally chapappa guy. I guess Awakening has different effects depending on the Devil fruit type.

this theory makes more sense now. Zoan Awakened user becomes kind of like the animal/thing the fruit is. These DF users turned real animals after this.. Same as G5 of Luffy where he comes a bit of a crack.

To me Luffy and Blackbeard are mirror image of each other. They have similar dreams as a pirate, same goal of one piece and may share will of D Robin was talking before. Blackbeard just chose dark path unlike Luffy to reach for one piece. He is calculative, killed strong commander to get the devil fruit. From this episode it's clear that the reason for joining the world government was recruiting strong team members from impel down level 6. War between government and Whitebeard is a side effect which may benefit him also. And I think Luffy also understood that Blackbeard is his main opponent for one piece battle as he stopped and remembered Blackbeard talk in jaya island. I haven't read the manga and the latest episode of the anime but I hope Oda is preparing a grand stage of final battle for one piece between Luffy and Blackbeard team.

Here are some thoughts I've been having about some of the characters.
Luffy: charismatic, chaotic good. Rallies good people around him, but gets up to some pretty whacky shit.
Blackbeard: charismatic, chaotic evil. Rallies evil people around him, and gets up to some pretty whack shit. You know he's bad but you kinda want to see what he has planned.
Magellan: charismatic, lawful ... neutral/evil? Yes he can be brutal, but he doesn't seem to have evil intentions. He's trying his best to uphold the law as he sees it. However he certainly doesn't place much value on lives he deems criminals. Also I have a feeling we definitely haven't seen the limits of his powers yet.
My prediction a few episodes back seems to be shaping up. The second warden that got released from level 6, I knew he was up to some no good stuff. I'm just not sure yet if he's just using the chaos for his own goals, or if he is directly working with Blackbeard.
Speaking of Blackbeard, I predict that his reason for entering Impel Down is to find a specific somebody or somebody's housed there and add them to his crew for a specific reason. I'm just not sure at this point who could be important enough to go to such lengths and risk his life and title on the endeavor.
